Assmannshausen

Although now officially a district of Rüdesheim, the delightful Assmannshausen was originally an entirely separate village. Situated on a curve in the beautifully scenic Rhine Valley, the village is surrounded by a backdrop of terraced vineyards, in which some of Germany's most popular red wines are produced. The village boasts a remarkably well-preserved centre, crammed with timber-framed houses and crooked narrow streets - ensuring Assmannshausen retains a reputation as a fantastic tourist attraction. One of Assmannshausen's best-known sights is the quirky Painted House. Here windows, doors and people have been painted very realistically on a flat wall - fooling a number of passers-by with its startling detail.
