Malcesine

Malcesine, positioned at the foot of the dramatic Monte Baldo, is a popular town at the northern end of Lake Garda where the lake resembles the Norwegian fjords. At this narrow stretch of Lake Garda, dramatic cliffs rise steeply from the very edge of the water. Malcesine is home to the 14th century Scaligeri Castle, which dominates the town. From the town there is a cable-car that carries passengers up to the top of the mountain for incredible views of the lake and countryside beyond.

Ridging along much of the eastern side of Lake Garda, Monte Baldo separates the lake from the Val d'Adige, the valley of the river which flows through Verona. The cable car climbs from 328 feet (100 metres) to 5741 feet (1750 metres) in around 15 minutes with a break in the middle. On the upper section the cars revolve slowly to give a spectacular panorama of the lake and its surrounding mountains.

The train journey's were long at times and not particularly scenic. The large train stations were stressful and connections,...
